The history of Āranya Sēnāsana (forest monasteries) in Sri Lanka dates back centuries, with Wilandagoda Āranya Sēnāsanaya (Salvānā Raja Mahā Vehera) holding a special place among them.
Located near the 17th-mile post on the Puttalam-Anuradhapura road in Pahala Puliyankulama, this monastery sits near the southern border of Wilpattu National Park. For many years, monks here have adhered to a strict monastic discipline, dedicating their lives to spiritual practice.
Wilandagoda Āranya Sēnāsanaya is a site of immense religious and historical significance, home to many revered landmarks. Among them, the Saliya Cave stands out due to its deep historical connection. According to legend, Prince Saliya, the son of King Dutugemunu, took refuge in this cave after eloping with Asokamala, a woman of lower caste renowned for her exceptional beauty.
This monastery is a center for deep meditation and spiritual development. Numerous natural caves serve as Vipassana Bhavana (insight meditation) retreats for monks seeking enlightenment through disciplined practice. Surrounded by pristine nature, the monastery fosters a secluded and meditative atmosphere, making it unsuitable for casual visits. Instead, it serves as a dedicated retreat for monks devoted to spiritual advancement.
Visitors are encouraged to approach the monastery with deep reverence, fully appreciating its religious and historical significance. Many important Buddhist ceremonies, including the Katina Robe Offering, are held here annually, further enriching its spiritual legacy.
Wilandagoda Āranya Sēnāsanaya remains a highly venerated site in Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage. Preserving its sanctity and maintaining its serene, respectful environment is a shared responsibility for all who visit.
